Podstata systému kapkové závlahy spočívá v tom, že voda je rostlinám dodávána pozvolna, v malých dávkách, skutečně po kapkách. Nezvlhčuje se celá plocha povrchu záhonu, ale jen část – těsně u kořenů rostliny. Bez obav lze zalévat třeba v pravé poledne, rostliny se nespaří, protože voda je okamžitě vsakována ke kořenům a tím se ochlazuje. Úspora spotřeby vody proti závlaze postřikem činí 25 až 75 %. Oceníte ji zejména tam, kde je omezený zdroj vody, například v zahrádkářských osadách či u rekreačních objektů.

Předností systému je jednoduchost provozu, spolehlivost zálivky, omezení fyzické námahy a časová úspora. Na menších plochách může kapková závlaha pracovat řadu dní bez obsluhy.

Kapkový systém zahrnuje několik prvků, které přizpůsobíme požadované velikosti zavlažované plochy. Základ systému tvoří hadice s kapacími otvory, kterou položíme na připravený záhon, nejlépe před osetím či osázením. Začátek hadice napojíme na výpustný ventil nebo rezervoár (sud, vanu) a pustíme vodu. Voda protéká hadicí, v níž jsou v místě otvoru pro kapání vody uvnitř vlisovány takzvané dripy, kde labyrint chodbiček stlačí vodu do kapacího otvoru. Rozteč otvorů je dána výrobcem systému.

Pro kultury například jahod, okurek a salátu je doporučena rozteč kapačů 250 mm, pro rajčata, papriku a zelí 500 mm. Zdá-li se vám vzdálenost větší, než je obvyklé, je to proto, že rostliny zavlažované kapkovou závlahou vytvářejí více listové plochy a z toho důvodu potřebují dostatek místa. Zálivka probíhá rovnoměrně, protože tlak v hadici se vyrovná a drip pouští jen množství, které dovolí labyrint.

Pro spolehlivou funkci systému kapkové závlahy pro jeden kapač postačuje tlak vody 0,2 MPa při spotřebě 2 až 4 litrů za hodinu. Technické parametry tlaku vycházejí z předpokladu, že rezervoár (sud, vana) je umístěn ve výšce minimálně metr nad zemí. Spotřeba vody se řídí vnitřním tlakem kapacích otvorů a nikoli průměrem hadice, která se standardně dodává o průměru 16 mm.

Hadice kapkové závlahy je možné rozvést volně po povrchu půdy, zavěšené nad záhony či přímo ke kořenům rostlin pod zem. Není třeba se obávat ucpání kapkovačů, protože konstrukce kapkového otvoru a dripu je řešena tak, aby k ucpávání nedocházelo. Hadici v místě, kde předpokládáme časté šlapání, můžeme chránit vložením do trubky nebo ji umístit do žlábku mezi dvě prkna či dlaždice.

Praktické využití kapkové závlahy není pouze jednoúčelové. Kromě úspory vody a energie dosáhneme cílenou zálivkou omezení růstu plevelů, zabráníme výskytu a šíření plísňových chorob, snadno můžeme dávkovat a aplikovat tekutá hnojiva a navíc ušetříme fyzickou sílu a čas. Například záhon plný jahod dá pěstiteli pořádně zabrat, hlavně když chce mít slušnou úrodu, a tehdy ocení výhody kapkové závlahy. Chce to jen nasázet jahody na hrůbky, položit černou fólii, na ni položit hadici s kapači a do sklizně se již nemusí o nic starat. Rostliny jsou zavlažovány zespodu, takže dozrávající plody nehnijí a nechytají plíseň. Podobně lze postupovat u jakékoliv plodiny na záhoně, ve skleníku a třeba i na balkóně.
